Diarrhea in dogs is sometimes very mild and it might clear up within 2-3 days. While mild dog diarrhea could be handled with some home remedies it should be noted that in severe cases consult your vet. For instance, diarrhea that does not lead to loss of appetite, loss of thirst or lethargy is not an emergency and you may apply home remedy mostly when the diarrhea still persist after 2-3 days.

In the occurrence of diarrhea discontinue the usual dog food, instead you should give your dog small servings of a bland diet 4-5 times through out the entire day. You may want to choose from the following:

cooked white rice (no butter or flavorings)
cottage cheese (no liquid)
boiled chicken (no grease, no skin, no flavorings)
boiled turkey (no grease, no skin, no flavorings)
scrambled egg (no butter or oil)
boiled egg (no butter or oil)
boiled potato (no skin or flavorings)
baked potato (no skin or flavorings)

You should be consistent in feeding your dog with several small servings of this bland diet for a few days and thereafter gradually increasing amounts until you noticed that there is a formed stool. Then, start to wean your pet back to its regular food over the course of a week by gradually working in small amounts of their regular dry dog food.

Pepto Bismol or Immodium can also be given to your dog at least every six hours and every eight hours respectively but the dosage is dependent on the weight of the dog ( 1 ml per 10 lbs). Do your due diligence before using any dog diarrhea remedies or over- the counter medications and always consult your vet to give you dosage instruction that will be in accordance with prescription.

Additionally, home remedies for dog includes the use of some minerals such as probiotics, certain herbs as well as glutamine that could be included in the food of the dog. To facilitate the quick recovery of your dog add probiotic powder to the water you give. You can also add priobitic powder to the food that the dog eat when their condition gets a little better. Thereafter place the dog under observation and if you find out that the diarrhea has stopped then you can feed the dog with small amounts of low-fat food at least three times a day for a week. Bland foods are the best. When you are satisfied with the dog complete recovery gradually go back to your dog's normal diet. Fluid intake is very important in keeping your dogs away from diarrhea.

While home remedies could save you a small chunk of change in a pinch, it is reaffirmed that you should always consult with your veterinarian, at least by telephone, and at the initial stage you noticed any symptom.
